Alexa Leigh Krepps
began studying music at age three, and at age eight she was introduced
to theatre arts. When she was twelve her grandmother Annabelle
introduced her to Middle Eastern dance. After exploring many different
kinds of art Alexa decided to commit fully to mastering the dance. She
started studying under the guidance of Fikriyyah, who pushed her to
perform to the best of her ability and encouraged her love of the art.
In 2006, Alexa gladly accepted the challenge of sharing her knowledge
with others, and after receiving training from Fikriyyah began
instructing weekly courses in cabaret dancing. Of the initial stages
of this career, she says, "I wonder if we ever feel prepared to take on
a lot of responsibility. I think the best way to know if you are or not
is just to be thrown into it and see if you float or if you sink. I'm
happy to say that up to this point things have gone swimmingly." She
currently teaches four classes a week, including a Cardio exercise
class "Bellyrobics" that she designed which brings together the art of
belly dance and a fun aerobic workout.
Her love of music
and creative expression lead her to study a variety of instruments and
musical styles. In 2003 she pursued her interests further by entering
the Pennsylvania State University school of the arts, and in May of
2007 graduated with degrees in Integrative Arts and Italian. While at
the university, she enrolled at the Central Pennsylvania School of
Massage, and was certified as a massage therapist in February, 2005.
"I think it is important to try to be as good as you can be at anything
you do," she says, a maxim she has exemplified in her teaching,
dancing, and life.
